In the southern region of Kaduna, Hope for Village Child Foundation (HVCF) has spearheaded a transformative campaign to address calcium deficiency disease called “Rickets” among children. Following a successful food demonstration in the Kubacha community on February 21st, 2024, we recognized the critical need to educate the public and families with children suffering from calcium deficiency (Rickets) at our health center on the importance of incorporating calcium-rich foods into their diets.
On Tuesday, March 7th, 2024, we organized a crucial one-day event at our health center (Jakaranda), focusing on parents whose children are affected by calcium deficiency (Rickets). The event began with informative health lectures delivered in both Hausa and English language, highlighting the dangers and causes of calcium deficiency, along with practical solutions to address this pressing issue.
Parents were then guided through the preparation of calcium-rich meals for their family consumption, such as soya (soy) milk, Moringa Salad, and fresh carrots to mention a few. These recipes, utilize locally available and affordable ingredients to provide a sustainable solution to increase calcium intake and encourage healthier lifestyles for families in Kaduna communities.
The impact of this initiative was tangible, with over 130 families in attendance expressing appreciation for the newfound knowledge that enables them to effectively nourish their families and prevent Rickets occurrence among their children. Through education and practical demonstrations, we are paving the way for healthier futures and combating undernutrition in Kaduna, one meal at a time.
