Hope for Village Child Foundation (HVCF) conducted a blood sample collection exercise in Jaba, Kachia, Jama’a, and Kagargo Local Government Areas of Kaduna State, as part of its unwavering commitment to a brighter future for children. This activity is a vital component of the Foundation’s ongoing Rickets Project, which aims to address the debilitating effects of rickets among children in the region.
Rickets, a condition caused by a deficiency of Vitamin D, calcium, or phosphate, can lead to soft and weakened bones, delayed growth, and, in severe cases, deformities. The blood sample collection is carried out every six months and is crucial in guiding the treatment of affected children. These samples undergo blood chemistry testing to measure the levels of calcium, phosphorus, creatinine, and alkaline phosphatase—key indicators that inform doctors on the best course of action, whether through medication or surgical intervention.

Challenges of Blood Sample Collection
The process of collecting blood samples, particularly from young children, is not without its challenges. Many parents and guardians struggle to understand the necessity of the tests, which require extensive sensitization efforts by the Foundation’s staff. Explaining the importance of tracking these vital elements and their role in determining effective treatment often requires patience and compassion.
Additionally, the physical process of drawing blood from small children is inherently delicate. Tracing tiny veins and witnessing the children’s tears and cries can be heart-wrenching, but the team’s dedication to alleviating their pain and ensuring proper care keeps them resolute.

Free or Subsidized Care, Thanks to Support
What makes this initiative remarkable is the affordability of the treatment. The tests, calcium supplements, and even surgeries (when necessary) are provided at little or no cost to families. This has been made possible through the generous funding support of MISEREOR, a foundation committed to humanitarian causes.
MISEREOR’s support allows HVCF to extend life-changing interventions to children who might otherwise have no access to such specialized care. By easing the financial burden on families, the Foundation ensures that children with Rickets receive the attention they need without added stress.
A Future of Hope
The Rickets Project is more than a medical intervention—it is a beacon of hope. For families, it represents the possibility of a healthier future for their children. For the children, it means freedom from pain and the ability to grow strong and thrive.
HVCF’s efforts are a testament to the power of compassion and community-driven action. By addressing both the medical and emotional challenges of treating rickets, we are not only healing bones but also mending hearts, one child at a time.
As the blood chemistry results come in and treatments proceed, we remain steadfast in our vision: ensuring that every child has the chance to live a life of dignity and potential.
